British Values

St Mary’s promotes the fundamental British values. Our staff model the values through their own behaviour and teach the values implicitly through every aspect of the curriculum, ensuring equality and excellence for all pupils.

The Governing Body ensures that these values are reflected and implemented effectively in school policy and practice and that there are effective risk assessments in place to safeguard and promote students’ welfare.

Democracy

Having a school council
Highlighting the development of democratic ideas in history lessons
Allowing pupils to vote for House or Sports captains
Ensuring all pupils are listened to by adults
Inviting MPs and other speakers to the school

The Rule of Law

Having a clear behaviour policy that is explained to all
Organising visits from the police service to reinforce the message of right and wrong
Highlighting the rules of the Church and God in the RE curriculum, for example the 10 commandments

Individual Liberty

Encourage students to be independent in their learning
Our pupils know they are in a safe and supportive environment where adults are always ready to listen to them.
We provide boundaries for young people to make choices safely.

Mutual respect

Having a mission statement that is inclusive
Constantly promoting respect for others as good manners
Reinforcing the value of everyone’s opinions in class discussions
Having an effective anti-bullying policy
Emphasising in RE and PSCHE lessons that every person is unique and “created in the image of God”
Supporting charitable works

Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

Our Way Truth and life RE scheme provides pupils with a deep understanding of their own faith as well as awareness of the faith and traditions of other religious communities
Show how Jesus encouraged tolerance in stories such as The Good Samaritan and The Women at the Well
Termly multi – faith afternoons based around a them e.g Sacred Stories

Another faith is a yearly focus and learnt about in more detail e.g Judaism
